English for the 5th grade English for the 5th grade Skills By the end of 5th grade, pupils should be able to: Use Cognitive Skills Recognize, comprehend, read and correctly verbalize words and phrases at this level according to the list of lexical items in the English Curriculum and other words introduced in the course book and by the teacher (approximately 600 words and phrases taught gradually over the course of 3 years, from the beginning of 3rd grade until the end of 5th grade.) Recognize, understand, read, write and verbalize the above-mentioned words in the context of familiar and unfamiliar texts. Differentiate between text types (letters, emails, ads. etc.) and answer questions about the text both orally and in writing, identify the main idea, compare information from various texts and read with correct understanding guided by punctuation that appears in the texts. Write (using correct punctuation) or present orally about familiar topics using taught structures e.g. This is … / He is … / There are etc. Listen to and read simple stories (extensive reading / storytelling), give a text an original title, identify cognates in English and first language and notice differences in literature and culture between different people.
